I pledge to be a safe rider

The Safe Riders Campaign kicks off a series of public education efforts following the Government’s acceptance of the Rules and Codes of Conduct for Cycling and PMDs during the Committee of Supply Debate 2016. Under the new rules, bicycles and PMDs like kick-scooters, e-scooters, electric unicycles and hoverboards can be used on footpaths, shared paths and cycling paths. Safe Riders Campaign to promote best practices for cyclists and PMD users.

The Wheelies took the opportunity during the 5th edition of the Car Free Sunday SG to take our pledge too.

Hey! Check out my cool wheel

"Personalization will never go out of style."

Growing up in an era where people customized their mobile phone cases and LED lights on their Ericsson and Motorola phones, this statement couldn't be more true. People basically customize their mobile phones covers and screensavers according to personality, their favorite movies, pictures of family members and loved ones etc.

Personalization is not only limited to phones. You can also see in car decals, laptops, printed t-shirts, wallpapers and many others.

How about customization on electric unicycles? With the electric unicycle become ubiquitous, has the "personalized syndrome" caught up with the growth? Let's look at the work our members have done.

Wrapping

Wrapping the wheel, in my own personal opinion, is one of the best method to get your wheel personalized. Since the difficult task of sticking the wheel is left to the professionals, all you need is to think of a design or share an idea of what you like to them.

Which PMD is right for me?

"We can build up a culture of graciousness and safety, we will be able to better take care of everyone’s needs. Many people we interacted with agreed that sharing paths with cyclists and PMD users can be done, as long as clear rules and guidelines are followed. Thus, the Panel focused on developing a set of rules and code of conduct, which we believe are practical, clear, fair, and most importantly, safeguards the safety of all users. These rules and code of conduct must be complemented by public education, effective enforcement and more cycling infrastructure. But it is not just the Government’s responsibility; every one of us has a role to play and can make things better simply by showing more consideration for others,” said A/P Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim.

Chaired by A/P Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, the Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP), together with LTA has recently announced the following recommendations for Personal Mobility Devices.

• Always give way to pedestrians on footpaths and shared paths. Remember also that pedestrians have the right of way on pedestrian crossings
• Slow down and be prepared to stop when approaching high pedestrian-traffic areas such as bus-stops
• Either ‘walk your bicycle’ or dismount and push at high pedestrian-traffic areas
• Stop and look out for on-coming traffic when approaching pedestrian crossings, and cross only at walking speed
• Always stop to render assistance and exchange particulars when involved in an accident

The Panel also recommends the following physical criteria for all bicycles and PMDs:

• Maximum device speed of 25km/h (for motorised devices only);
• Maximum width of 700mm; and
• Maximum un-laden weight of 20kg.

With so many sellers and different types of PMDs available in the market, the buyers are usually feeling lost with regards to who to buy from and what are the type of wheels can be purchased so that they are legal within the framework set by LTA. The Wheelies attempt to summarize four different type of wheels that are LTA compliant in the table below:

Wheel with care!

Wheeling has been a favorite pastime for many of us. It is widely seen as a social tool and a hobby for those who adopted this unique form of wheel. Some of us have even ditched our cars and switched to the electric unicycles as the first and last mile transportation. People who wheel enjoy the freedom and the attention on them. While the pavements / routes of Singapore are relatively safe, we still need to be aware of the risk different terrains bring. We attempt to create the awareness by showing you the kind of terrains that we need to take note and rate them according to the slip risk. (1 being lowest and 5 begin highest)
